"Love Letters" by A. R. Gurney

"Love Letters" by A. R. Gurney, is a two-character love story that stages the reading of cards and letters written by a man, Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, and a woman, Melissa Gardner, to each other over a lifetime.  They had gone their separate ways by college, but continued to communicate via the written letter as they support each other during all their coming of age experiences, including their family and societal trials and tribulations.  Andy is fond of writing about his scholastic, and professional accomplishments, his marriage and children, etc., as he continues to rise to his eventual U.S. Senate position.  On the other hand, Melissa tries to keep their exchanges more grounded, sensual and intimate, as she is a free spirited artist.  She even recommends that they resort to phone calls instead of letters, but Andy remains adamant that the true essence of communication is best crafted by the written word.  Towards the end, she and Andy become involved in a secret affair, but he feels something isn't right with it and cuts it short.  However Andy's last letter, written to her mother after Melissa's untimely death, makes it clear how close they really were over the years, as he expresses many of his deepest sentiments for her and their life long relationship.

Recent open rehearsal in features Diana Bachand as "Melissa" and James DeSantis as "Andrew".
