Greetings All! (Aug 8, 2009)

We on the board are going to try to keep everyone informed when one of our members (or even former members) is performing in another production.

Gloria Spang

We recently lost Gloria Spang, one of our long time, and much beloved members.  Bill Gaylardo, who knew her many years has written a fitting tribute:

Gloria Spang - Dance teacher, Choreographer, Friend

Gloria was born in the Bronx, N.Y. She attended Staten Island High School. She began her professional career as a dance teacher in NY and the western part of Ma. In the 1970's she brought her talents to Beverly and Danvers opening The Gloria Goodwin School of Dance. In 1985 she choreographed and appeared in North Shore Players production of "No No Nanette". Gloria has choreographed and appeared in almost every NSP musical since becoming a member in 1985.

The best way I can pay tribute to this loving person is to tell you about my relationship with Gloria. I met Gloria at a dance rehearsal for "LiL Abner" in 1988. She said everyone can dance; all you need to do is try and --"Practice, Practice, Practice!"

Gloria was a task master when it came to dancing. She knew what she wanted and would work with you until you got the routine correct. She taught me and many other North Shore Players how to dance.  She didn’t mind too much when I missed a dance step or stepped on her toes. I was her dance partner for many of the NSP musicals we appeared in. Whenever she needed a male dancer, I would get a phone call "Billy I need you!" Who could refuse her? She always made you look professional. She said she created the HAM in me! She was right!

Gloria was also very active with the Peter Torrigian Senior Citizens Center in Peabody. She directed and choreographed a Senior Citizen show every year for the past 15 yrs. Amazingly, she was still performing splits at 84 in the Senior Citizens show!

Gloria was the youngest person I have ever known. To know Gloria was to love her. She will be missed by all of us who were part of her theatre family. Wherever her spirit lies she is still teaching dance moves to someone.
